About Horde Chess

Horde Variant, or Horde Chess, is an asymmetrical chess variant. It was originated from a variant called Dunsany’s Chess, which was invented by Lord Dunsany in 1942. In that variant, White began with a half of a board full of pawns. Turns out that this put white at a disadvantage, so the current version includes 4 more pawns for white. Later it was determined that the side with the pawns will always be the white pieces. Read more about the rules of Horde Chess on the blog page.

In recent years, Horde Chess got the recognition he deserves, with support in all major online chess platforms and the Stockfish chess engine. Thousands of active players play it every week, exploring its tactics, strategies, openings, and endgames.

Horde chess is the most asymmetrical chess variant, making it uniquely interesting. Whether you are an amateur chess player, a professional, or new to chess, I think you will like Horde Chess.

About me

My name is Reuven Peleg, and I have been playing classic chess for about 17 years. After getting a little bored with chess, I tried some variants to rediscover the initial excitement. On the 14th of October 2019, I discovered Horde chess, and I knew I finally got this. Its asymmetrical features, extensive pawn structure, and unique patterns kept occupying me, and I began exploring the ideas behind a good playing strategy. I am playing Horde Chess on Lichess, under the username rubdub.

In this blog, I am continuing the journey with the purpose of sharing and collaboration, so we can all enjoy Horde Chess games and tactics.
